Samuel Hulme, PhD
Geochemist, Geologist, Surveyor

Commencing a career in marine science in 1999 at the Benthic Ecology Lab at Moss Landing Marine Labs, Sam dedicated 11 years to obtaining an education in marine geosciences while conducting research on nine deep-sea research vessels across twenty expeditions. Sam was critical in the design, fabrication, and use of Osmotic Samplers that allow long-term sampling of fluids in deep sea environments. He developed numerous analytical methods to measure trace elements at levels that were not previously possible in complex matrices. After obtaining a Ph.D in Geology and Geophysics, Sam has applied his expertise in both the academic and commercial sectors by contributing to numerous geophysical, geochemical, core sampling, and scientific drilling expeditions. Several of these cruises involved the use of manned submersibles, remotely operated vehicles, and autonomous vehicles. With an extensive background in analytical chemistry, Sam has also designed laboratories from the ground up, both on land and sea, including a NELAC-accredited environmental testing lab. He brings a wealth of real-world experience and technical expertise to maximize quality, productivity, sample integrity, and safety for our clients.

Professor Geoff Wheat
University of Alaska Fairbanks
DOWNLOAD CV (PDF)

Geoff Wheat uses chemical tracers to understand processes that influence the cycle of elements in the oceans. Much of this work focuses on the transport of fluids through the oceanic crust in a range of settings, including hydrothermal systems on mid-ocean ridges and flanks and seepage sites along subduction zones and in coastal environments. Studies typically include sampling and analyzing fluids and solids, developing transport-reaction models, and relating results to biogeochemical cycles and crustal evolution. Wheat has participated in 79 ocean expeditions, of which 49 included a submersible or ROV component. On 26 of these cruises, Wheat was the Chief Scientist or one of two Co-Chief Scientists. Wheat also has participated in two legs of the Ocean Drilling Program and seven expeditions of the Integrated (International) Ocean Drilling (Discovery) Program (IODP).
